Tuesday Night Tunes – Nothing Else Matters…

I think I must lead a sheltered life. I was working in my office tonight getting ready to bring Susan to church for a meeting and heard this song playing as the background music on the TV.

Then after I did a little looking I found this….

The lyrics are here…

So close no matter how far
Couldn’t be much more from the heart
Forever trust in who we are
And nothing else matters

Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don’t just say
And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know

So close no matter how far
Couldn’t be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
But I know

I never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don’t just say
And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they say
Never cared for games they play
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know (yeah!)

So close no matter how far
Couldn’t be much more from the heart
Forever trust in who we are
No nothing else matters

My sheltered life never took me toward Metallica. Ever. I guess I need to do a little exploring but that will be for later. The question posed is shown as a statement in the title. Nothing Else Matters.

So, what matters to you? The picture at the top is titled “Nothing Else Matters” and I just stumbled on that too. I like the idea it shows. I’m not sure what the picture really is but to me if captures an older guy sitting on the sidewalk to talk to someone who is alone. It looks like to me the younger man is maybe homeless and asking for help. Maybe just hanging out because he has no where else to go. So, why does this matter?

I am convinced that the only thing that does matter is people. Naked we came into the world and naked we depart. We carry nothing with us in or out. We are here to create our stories so they might be shared with each other while we are here and in the hereafter. Stories are all we get to take with us. I don’t believe you win when you die if you have more stuff than I do. I don’t believe I lose either but sometimes we act that way.

I got to think about all that over the last couple of weeks as we listened to Robert Morris talk about his book, The Blessed Life. The center of his book is about giving. Giving back to God His portion of our blessings. Giving to others in need because we can. Giving for the pure joy of it. Not so we will ‘get’ but to give because it’s the right thing to do.

We are taught how to ‘make money’ in the world is to buy and sell. Buy low, sell high. Make a profit and that is all there is. I got something out of the book that is very different. It isn’t about making money or a profit but it is about sowing and reaping.

My coach talks about giving.  “What you give out in slices comes back in loaves”. My pastor talks about giving. “Give more than you take”. That seems to be God’s economy. I’m not going to get into a deep theological discussion but it is the idea I have been contemplating and it makes sense to me.

It’s not just money we give either. We give our time. We give our energy. We give our forgiveness. We give grace. I like that. Give out slices of grace and loaves of grace comes back to you. Give out forgiveness and we are forgiven. Personally, I need both.

What are you sowing?

Thanks for listening,
