For St. Patricks day – a mulligan… everyday.
I am not a morning person. Not at all. My old business partner refused to have a meeting with me before 10am. He said I was unfit for human companionship before 10 so this might seem a little strange coming from me. I am becoming convinced that it is best to get up early. Early for me means about 6:30am but believe me that is a challenge.
I really am a night owl and it is not at all unusual to see my office light on at 1am with me working at the computer doing something but it occurred to me that God grants us a mulligan everyday. To get it all we have to do is go to bed, sleep and when we get up our mulligan starts.
Now if you don’t know what a mulligan is just click here and get a lesson. It’s primarily a golfing term but it mean ‘a do over’.
We get to have a little coffee, some quiet time to focus, think and plan our day. It beats rushing around and getting flustered before I even get out the door. I will say, I am probably not getting into a meeting before 10 still but I am certainly better prepared to greet the day when I do get out so maybe Ben Franklin had it right when he said “Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” I even found 44 different places in the Bible that talked about “early morning“.
I guess the thought I have is that even though I feel awake at 1am, my perspective and mood might be a bit darker. I am more tired than if I were to head to bed by 11pm and sleep 7-8 hours and get up to enjoy my ‘do over’.
I hope you have a great St. Patricks day and don’ t celebrate too much tonight so perhaps you will get to enjoy your own mulligan tomorrow.Maybe that’s what ‘Top of the Mornin’ really means!’
Thanks for listening,
