Jim Rohn – Work at work
His story about taking my briefcase to the beach is the truth of my life. I used to work on vacations. Intentionally. I worked for a company at that time and I would take my laptop so I could write software while sitting on the balcony looking at the water.
I was a skilled engineer. I was not gifted as an engineer. I had co-workers who were gifted and I was jealous. I had to work hard to get the same amount of output and I didn’t understand the difference between gifted and skilled at that time. It just came easy to them. They ‘saw’ the result in their mind’s eye and I just could not do that. I had to work hard and I chose to do it on vacation just to keep up.
That was a mistake.
The truth is my giftedness was in other things and I didn’t get that until I left engineering over a decade ago.
Now I’m better at controlling my time. I have learned some of the lessons like delegating work to others. I have someone cut my grass and clean my house so I am free to work on things only I can do. I have an assistant to do things I should not be doing. She controls a lot of the paperwork and manages my emails so I can focus on what I should be doing. It’s better use of my time and it gives me space. Space in my head to think about business. To focus on ideas and plan future work. Focus on my areas of giftedness.
The big benefit of this is to allow me to ‘be where my feet are’. Look down. Are your feet there? Then you need to be where your feet are. Are you on vacation? Then be on vacation. Stop thinking about work. Focus on the place, the people, the moment of where you are.
Are you at work? Then do your work! Focus is a powerful tool and we don’t seem to use it enough. We’re scattered, fragmented and focus is one of the 1st casualties. Productivity is the next.
Remember, be where your feet are.
I hope you have a great week!
Thanks for listening,
Jerry Robertson
