Magic Words … ?
There is a lot of information about affirmations and what they can do in your life. I had a great conversation with one of our pastors yesterday. His name is Dan Reiland and he has a great blog you can check out. It is about leadership mostly and is a great read.
I have been inundated lately with information on how ‘what we believe’ and ‘what we say to ourselves’ affects our lives. This goes back a long time for me and I’ll try to keep this short.
Pastor Kevin Myers gave a great talk to a group of leaders at 12Stone Church about belief a couple of years ago. He taught about Caleb and Joshua as they came back with the other 10 spies from the promised land. Caleb and Joshua were convinced that they (Israel) could take the promised land. The other 10 were convinced they could not. Here is a link to a Wikipedia article for more details on the 12 spies story. Check it out when you have a little time but the gist of Kevin’s lesson was that both groups were right. Joshua and Caleb did eventually take the land God promised and the other 10 died in the desert.
On 16 October 2011 Pastor Kevin continued that lesson in a sermon series called Supernatural. The lesson was summarized as “Life’s battle is physical and spiritual. I have to fight and pray. As I pray, the Supernatural invades the natural. This is how I conquer.” You can get a download of that message by clicking here.
One of the things I do to help me process thoughts is to take notes. During that lesson I wrote this. “Affirmations- what if I am not saying them to me but to God as a prayer, releasing Supernatural power in my life?” Funny thing is I didn’t remember writing that down until I found that paper this morning. Blending that all with the information I have acquired up to now it makes me wonder if saying the words out loud don’t have some sort of impact that I can’t see or feel but in fact actually cause things to happen in my life.
We believe that something like this happens when we hesitate to say something cause it will “jinx the deal” or be a ‘self-fulfilling prophesy’. We believe it for bad things that happen so maybe there is some truth in it and we need to do it for the good things that we want instead.
Now here is an example of what I am NOT talking about:
Don’t do like this guy. There is no ‘secret’ to doing this so don’t get caught up in the metaphysical stuff but it just makes me wonder if there isn’t a bit of truth wrapped up in this message. Saying stuff out loud as a prayer or affirmation may have power over us in a physical sort of way. Our brains process things based on our senses and hearing causes another input to that magnificent creation we call a brain. 3 pounds of ‘meat’ that we use to think, move and act in this world.
What if hearing it makes us more aware of the possibilities we see everyday that we would have over looked if we did not say it out loud to our own brain or spirit. I think we have several components that make up the life form we call human. We have a physical part to be sure but there is something we call a soul and perhaps even something else we call a spirit. I feel like I am headed down a path that is going to take much more time and space than I have right now so if I can be a bit abrupt I am going to stop here.
Give this some thought and if you want to talk more then call me. I would love a conversation about it. You can comment here too if you register to comment. Let me know if you have trouble with that. Some do.
Thanks for listening,
