Property Tax Update. Did you get your new assessment?

Gwinnett County mailed out 256,000 residential notices of current assessment on Friday, 15 April. Did you get yours?? You better check because you have 45 days to appeal it if you believe it to be too high. If you’re not in Gwinnett then the schedule may be different but you should be getting a new assessment per state law. Here is a link to the Gwinnett Co. website with info about how to appeal.

Remember that tax assessed values have NO bearing on the actual value of your house in the future. It is the value assessed today just for tax purposes. If it is set higher than it should be then you will be paying too much in property taxes. I believe we will see an increase in millage rate coming soon and that will just amplify the error if you don’t fix it now.

If you need to know what your property is worth in today’s market I can help. Just call me at 678-231-1578 or email me and ask. I will provide a Comparative Market Analysis (CMA) that can be the documentation you need to submit an appeal. It won’t cost you anything for me to do that and it can save you some money.

I’ll post some more info on getting your house payment lowered too once the final assessment comes in. If your mortgage payment includes escrow payments for taxes you may be able to file with the mortgage company to lower your escrow payments if you taxes go down. We’ll do that a little later this quarter.

If there is anything I can do to help you, business or beyond, please just call me and ask. I’ll do all I can to help you.

Thanks for listening,
Jerry Robertson
