Tuesday Night Tunes – Aoife O’Donovan

I caught this one on NPR with the local station a couple of weeks ago. Love the voice and sound she produces. It was a great interview and some great songs. Here is one of them. I found a few of her songs you can download for free from NoiseTrade. Check it out.

In digging around I found more info on her and the band Crooked Still.

Not sure about you but I love bluegrass. Don’t want a steady diet of it but the talent and soft voices that you hear are comforting to me. It seems to come out of some of the spirituals but I found in my pursuit that I have a connection. It comes from a blend of Scottish, Irish, Welsh and English music.

Robertson is a Scottish clan and has it own tartan and coat of arms.

I have a few stories about the Scots and my search in some of the travels I have had. Haven’t been to Scotland (yet) but I hear it’s very ‘grrreen’. (roll that R over your tongue for the full effect). I was working in Pennsylvania one summer and saw a bill board for a Scottish Festival. So happened I was off that day and decided to check it out.

There were shops, food, sheep and dogs. Lots of things to see but I gravitated toward the beer truck. Imagine that!!

I met a young lass pulling beers and I asked her what was on tap.

She said ‘We have Tennents‘.

“What’s that?” I said.

With a look of surprise she asked ‘you’ve never had a Tennents? Well, let’s remedy that.”

I watched as she pulled a generous glass full and brought it over to me. She reached out as to give it to me and quickly pulled it back.

She said ‘there’s a blessing that goes with it’

She closed her eyes and began:

“Here’s to you and here’s to me
and may be never disagree.

But if we do….. to ‘ell with you and here’s to me!!”

And then with a huge smile on her face, she drank it!!

I finally did get a beer.

It was a great day.

I have been sitting here playing a playlist from youtube for Crooked Still. I highly recommend it. Maybe I’ll check it out on Google music.
