What was I thinking??
Ever make a bad decision? Did you know it was bad when you made it but you felt like you had no other choice? Would it have been better to ‘not choose’ as a choice?
I see billboards advertising to get out of a ‘bad title pawn’. Is there such a thing as a ‘good title pawn’? I have never done a title pawn but it seems to me to be a bad idea. Maybe you do need the money but from what I can tell the cost of such a loan is just unbelievably high. I am guessing that ‘pay day loans’ are in the same category. In my business, commission advances are another option that looks good on the surface but once you get deeper it is a bad idea.
I just read something our pastor Keven Myers wrote about sinking or standing in times of pressure. The quote that really hit me was “The reality is that we make decisions in personal storms of chaos that would never make sense when life is calm.” That is the truth if I ever heard it.
The idea of borrowing money on the one thing you need to drive to work, pick up the kids or run any other of the errands you have to do and risk losing the car (or worse your freedom) for a few dollars seems obviously a bad idea but people must do it all the time. They don’t see any other choice. I don’t necessarily think the person involved is stupid either. Just desperate.
Desperation comes when you feel like you are trapped. You make a choice between the lesser of two evils. Maybe there is a third choice that you just can’t see and that is to trust God for an answer.
When I am helping someone negotiate a deal I advise them to use all the time they have to make a decision. Don’t do something rash just because you want something to be over. What I find to be true is that the person on the other side will do something that creates another option. A better option for you because they can’t wait. It is true that this does not always happen but many times it does and the one who waited wins or at least gets something more than they would have otherwise.
In the words of Tom Petty ‘Waiting is the hardest part’. Check it out:
Hope you have a great Thursday and if you are waiting that something good comes to you.
