Who taught you that?

First day of spring and I had to go ride. I ended up in Blairsville, GA at the Aviator Cafe. Good Cuban sandwich and a nice place to rest and recharge. I’d recommend it to you.

I used my phone to track that ride and it was fantastic. Check out this video for a bit of that feeling you get on a bike. No crashes on this one but the rider is ‘aggressive’ to say the least.

I’m going somewhere with this so hang in and I think you’ll appreciate the idea I had.

It was about 70 degrees and sunny on the 1st day of spring in Georgia. I had a meeting in the office with new agents at 11am so I did not get an early start but right after that meeting I hit the road. It took about 30 minutes to get clear of the traffic and get on the twisty roads north of Gainesville. As I settled in I got to thinking about my life, business and a host of other things that invade my helmet on days like this.

Cool thing about riding a motorcycle is the need to concentrate. The typical ‘voices’ in my head take a backseat for a while and I get to focus. Focus is the best defense on a bike but there are stretches where you can just relax and enjoy the smells, the air in your face (yeah, like a dog out the window) and you see more on the back of a bike than in a car (cage).

One thought that crystallized on the ride is thinking about all the people that taught me something. Good or bad, I’ve learned most of what I know from other people. Teachers, coaches, parents, peers, etc. so I got to thinking about that and the blog is going to show up with some of those stories.

I made a list of 100 people who taught me something and what I learned from them. I figured I will change the names of the guilty ones to prevent lawsuits but the good ones need to be told how they helped me. I need to say thanks and some of them are no longer here and some of them don’t even know me.

I’ve learned things from those older than me, my age and younger than me. I’ve learned things from the experienced in my field and the newbie. I’ve learned things from those in authority over me and those I am responsible for.

I figure 300-500 words will be enough in most cases to tell the story and what I learned so they fit into a blog article nicely.

So here’s the question for today. Who have you learned from? What did they teach you?

I’ve heard that a fool won’t learn from his mistakes, a smart person does but a wise person learns from other’s mistakes.

Not all of these stories will be about mistakes but certainly some will. I’d like to hear about who taught you things and what you learned. Email me or call and share. You can put comments below too.

Happy Monday and thanks for listening,
Jerry Robertson
