Busy?

Overwhelm is a real thing.

We are facing so many stresses we have never had to face before. Pandemic, money, work, an election year, riots…. Ok, this is getting depressing so I’ll stop.

How do we thrive in the midst of this? Well, I’ll share what I’m doing.

  1. Turn off the news. Both sides spin it and take things out of context so the message matches the bias they want to enforce. I’ve witnessed this personally in the last few weeks and it makes me angry (if I let it). Truth be told, I can’t really ‘do’ anything right now, right this minute to affect the outcome of the election. Sure, I can help with a campaign or do my part to get folks to vote but watching the news likely won’t help me with any of the real actions I can take, so I turn it off.
  2. Write down 3 things you’re grateful for right now. Even in the midst of a lockdown, restrictions on where I can go, or what I can do, having to wear a mask, not hugging people I love, I can still find things to be grateful for. Health, rest, food, exercise, time… We all have more time and who of us hasn’t wished for more time? If you can keep going then make a list of 5 or 10 things every day because gratitude begets gratitude and willingness to help.
  3. Find someone who needs help. Maybe your job is ok, but theirs isn’t. $100 might not be a challenge for you but it could change someone else’s life at this moment. Maybe it’s just someone who is down, lonely and depressed and a phone call from you might make all the difference.
  4. In our work, we need to focus on the most important. 80% of your income is driven by 20% of your work or activities. That’s a real thing so take a minute and work out what your 20% is. Part f my 20% is writing articles like this. It gives me time to think about what’s important to me and the folks I mentor. The ones who take the time to listen or read what I do. That would be you if you’re reading this.

I’m going to stop here and share something that I love. I got to hear Andy present this years ago and I even had tickets to be in the audience for it but was not able to get to Nashville for the talk.

This is a theme he shares in his books, his podcast and all that he does. His story is about failure, depression and how he found 7 decisions that turned it all around for him.

We have to decide to make progress, to grow, to be all that we can be. We have to decide because ‘wanting’, ‘wishing’, and ‘hoping’ really won’t get it done.

Save this link and watch it instead of the news for a bit. I think it can change your life if you decide.

One last thought, we’re likely to be in transition from the old ‘normal’ to a new ‘normal’ for a while and if you’re isolated due to the pandemic it might be helpful to talk to someone.

I’m here and I’ll talk with you.

I mean it.

If you want to schedule a call you can click on this link. It will take you to a calendar where you can request a 30-minute time block. I’ll accept and we’ll get on Google Meet to talk face to face. We can go longer than 30 minutes too but we might need to schedule another time.

It’s free and it might just help if you’re stuck. No strings, no pitch, just someone to listen and maybe get you unstuck.

I’m here if you want to reach out.

I hope you will.

Thanks for listening,
Jerry Robertson
